Following the receipt of the Letter from Giragos and Pakrad, Toros sent a letter back to them Letter:Giragos and Pakrad, Summer 1217, stating that they couldn't travel to meet them immediately, but that messengers would be sent to visit them shortly. It was then decided to send a small party to visit Giragos and Pakrad to offer them employment at the covenant. The party would comprise Karnig, guarded by Khachatur and Aram, of Yerevan. They set off in early Summer 1216, and made good progress, reaching Ashtarak, a small town below Mount Aragats. Here they found there were two routes up the the fortress of Amberd - The man they spoke to, Arbi was leading a cart train taking timbers for the fortress, and would be following the east road north - a gentle, but long route. He advised them to take the road further west before striking north - it would be shorter, and quicker on foot. The grogs had decided that as the road to Amberd continued to further villages, and a monastery, they would use the cover story that they were travelling to that monastery, Karnig using the name of Mgrditch - the priest's name suggested in the letter from Giragos and Pakrad. No one seriously questioned them on the journey. They arrived safely at Amberd, the approach road passing in front of along-term military camp. Guarding appeared casual, and the troops un-uniformed. They gained admission to the camp to wait out of the sun, courtesy of a friendly guard on the gate, and waited in a rough ale house. The military camp was largely accommodation in tents and rough shacks to the north, with stables to the south, and lay to the north of the main construction camp, which in turn stood to the north of a church. Returning to the gate as the watches changed, they were accosted by a less friendly guard who wanted to know what they were doing in the camp, but they soon recognised Patvakan, and joined Giragos and him in their shelter. The shelter was small, and conversation was interrupted by two women - Anais and Yeraz who were clearly their 'families' referred to in the letter. Patvakan was unwilling to discuss details in front of them, but while they were away it was confirmed from the drawing carried by Karnig, drawn by Hratchouhi, that neither he nor Giragos recognised Illario as having anything to do with the old covenant. It was made clear to both the men that they, and their women, would be welcome at the covenant when their contract to guard here ended. Pakrad, it turned out, had been assigned to Eugenius, the Verditius mage as a personal shield grog, Giragos has been a more general gate guard. The discussion was fairly general, until Giragos accompanied the party to a communal hall used by the workers on the construction site to sleep in, where they rested overnight. It was arranged that both would come down here to continue their tales in more detail in the morning, before they went on duty at noon. The following morning they failed to appear. By late morning, Karnig went to the gate of the military camp to enquire after them, but the same friendly guard they had seen the previous day hadn't seen them this morning. It was decided to leave quickly, in case there was trouble, and the three grogs headed east, then north up the road towards the monastery. They stayed overnight in a village to the north, then headed south again, a suitable tie having elapsed that their story would seem possibly true, if they were seen again.
